THE DETAILS: From the Knox Trail Council website:

The Knox Trail Council Emergency Preparedness Expo should be a part of every unit’s fall calendar. Scouts and their families will embark on a day filled with valuable learning experiences. The Keefe Tech parking lot and athletic fields, 750 Winter Street, Framingham, Massachusetts, will come alive as a lifesaving forum on Saturday, September 16, 2006 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Cost is only $3 per participant.

The Emergency Preparedness Expo is designed to help Scouts in Knox Trail Council by raising awareness of emergency services available in the area, helping gain information about what to do in an emergency, and making resources available that can help save lives. At the Expo visitors will learn how to prepare for any emergency at home, at work or elsewhere, through hands-on courses, simulations and interaction with local emergency services. Many types of large rescue equipment will be on display.

At the Expo you will have a chance to learn tips from professionals in emergency services. Federal, State, County and Local police, fire and EMS agencies will be participating in this exciting event. Their demonstrations will include vehicle crash simulators, helicopters, burn trailers, evidence recovery units, SWAT teams, bomb sniffing dogs, robots, and much, much more!

Scouts will have the opportunity to complete requirements for a number of badges and awards by attending and interacting with the presenters. The day will be filled with unique opportunities for Scouts to gain expert knowledge that could help them save a life whether it is from a natural disaster, car accident or someone choking. This is a fun and exciting opportunity to educate Scouts on the importance of safety through interaction and by giving them the opportunity to ask questions.

Over 50 organizations, companies and individuals will be participating in the expo. They will be showing the latest emergency gear, holding exciting and informative demonstrations, and giving away tons of valuable information. There will be so much to see and do at this Expo it is sure to be fun for the whole family!

All Expo participants will receive a special commemorative Emergency Preparedness Expo patch as well as a limited-edition Knox Trail Council 10th Anniversary shoulder patch.

Merit Badge Signups for Summer Camp

Announcements — May 31, 2006 @ 2:16 pm

Dear Summer Campers,

It is time to sign up for summer camp merit badges. This year signup is available via on-line registration so the sooner you get your choices to Anne Fogarty or myself the better chance you have of getting in to the merit badge classes you want.

I have attached a copy of the Summer Camp Guide and you will find the Merit Badge offering and schedule on Page 8 and the prerequisites on Page 6.

There are many, many fun badges and you get to choose 2 or 4 badges. Note that soem badges like Metal Working, Life Saving, Climbing and Small Boat Sailing take two periods. Also look carefully at the pre-camp requirements for each badge. Some badges like Personal Fitness and Environmental Sciences require substantial pre-camp requirements. You can look up the merit badge requirements on-line at

http://www.meritbadge.com/mb/

It is nice to combine fun merit badges while also getting badges which help you towards Eagle Scout. First year scouts might consider both the Swimming and First Aid merit badges. Both are required for Eagle AND they fulfill many Second Class and First Class requirements. Another Eagle required merit badge is Emergency Preparedness and it appears that this is one you can complete at camp.

It going to be a fun week and whatever your choices are for Merit Badges you will learn something valuable, meet soem new Scout classmates, and have fun.

Please email any questions you might have or see me at the Scout meeting.

Again, the sooner you can get your selections in the better chance you will have of getting your choices.

Yours in Scouting

Nantucket Bike Trip

Announcements — May 15, 2006 @ 7:15 pm

The Nantucket Bike Trip is this weekend. There was a great deal of cooperation last week and most payments and permission slips were turned in. Some last minute planning is needed to make sure we get to the ferry on time:

  1. Attached is a roster showing payments made and permission slips turned in.
  2. For Scouts who have not paid payment must be made this Wednesday’s Troop meeting.
  3. Please bring cash for all payments since we do not have time to convert and cash checks.
  4. Trip costs are $50.00 for Scouts eighth grade or below, $60.00 for high school and above, including adults.
  5. Food costs are $9.00 per Scout in addition to the trip cost. Patrol food money will be given to patrols at the meeting.
  6. Adults going on trip will meet at Wednesday’s meeting to discuss their food menus for one dinner and two breakfasts. David Buckler has volunteered to buy one of the breakfasts. Lou Tieg and Don Lund will take care of buying the dinner. So we need a volunteer for the second breakfast. I suggest we collect $10.00 per adult at the meeting for the food purchases. There are 14 adults going.
  7. Adults will also work out the seating assignments for the trip from Sudbury at Wednesday’s meeting.
  8. On Thursday evening at 7:30 pm all the bikes need to be brought to the church to be loaded into a truck. You just have to drop off your bike and it will be loaded. The bikes are going to be packed tightly and if you have a concern about scratches perhaps a blanket type cover would be in order.
  9. On Thursday evening the patrols (and adults) will need to do their food shopping, for two breakfast and a dinner. We are going to travel light but if you need a small food cooler that can be carried from the car onto the ferry along with your personal gear then go for it.
  10. Try to do your packing ahead of time so you will absolutely ready by the time you go to school Friday morning. You should all have the packing list but if not there’s one attached. Remember to pack light. We have to walk a little distance to the ferry from the parking lot on Cape Cod. Knapsacks are recommended fro carrying the personal gear.
  11. The big crunch on this trip - and the reason for the incessant details - is that we need to make the ferry Friday evening in Hyannis. To do that we are leaving the church parking lot at 3:15 pm Friday afternoon. The group can’t wait on this one so please be at the church by 3:00 pm, and earlier if possible, fully ready to go and knowing which car you are going in.
  12. Please remember that you will need bag lunches for Friday night on the ferry and Saturday lunch. And you will need money for snacks, ice cream, and most especially for Sunday lunch during the two plus hour noontime ferry trip back to Hyannis. We don’t want anyone to go hungry. The attached Food.doc details the food and money needed in additional to what the patrols are buying.
So that’s the 12 point plan. By the way the weather for next weekend on Nantucket looks OK:

Forecast as of 6:00 pm Monday evening/ AccuWeather.Com:

Friday Night: A chance of rain in the evening; otherwise, cloudy most of the time. Winds from the S at 17 mph. Low: 51° F RealFeel: 43° F
Saturday Day: Periods of clouds and sunshine. Winds from the SSW at 17 mph. High: 61° F RealFeel: 57° F
Saturday Night: Partly cloudy. Winds from the SW at 14 mph. Low: 49° F RealFeel: 41° F
Sunday Day: Times of sun and clouds. Winds from the WSW at 18 mph. High: 62° F RealFeel: 56° F
Any questions call Dick Landrigan, evenings 443-8547.
