There were several scouts present to help faithfully set up tent after tent. They sorted through the bad parts, condemned some to the dumpster, then repacked them. The adults completely reorganized the patrol boxes, cleaning all the equipment. Scout master Hans Helgeson directed the project, helping out with basically everything, most notably fixing the old rolling box used during patrol meetings so that now it can actually support the items inside it. The closet was retrofitted with new fluorescent lighting and a large ceiling shelf, which holds multiple patrol boxes and clears up the closet significantly.

On October 21, 2011 Troop 61 Sudbury embarked on a backpacking trip to Yawgoog Pond. The backpacking group included sixteen scouts and six adults. We departed for Camp Yawgoog at around 9:00 AM and arrived before 11:00 AM. The backpacking hike began at 11:30 AM. The trip consisted of a tour of the camp led by Ben Kurn and a hike around Yawgoog Pond. The total backpacking trip lasted about four hours. Throughout the hike we crossed many small streams and bridges. Some of these bridges consisted of only wooden planks placed end on end. We stopped for a trail lunch at a campsite near the lake. Just before arriving at our campsite we were able to witness and climb up Smuggler’s Cliff. Our campsite was on top of the 60-120 foot cliff. Upon arrival at our designated camp we unpacked and pitched tents. The campsite consisted of two picnic tables and many large boulders. In order to boil water, we had to use backpacking stoves called whisper light stoves.

At around 7:30 PM we were invited to Pack 1 of Barrington, RI’s campfire. There we performed skits, sang songs, and ate smores. We returned to camp at around 10:30 PM after stargazing for meteors in a large field (We actually saw a few).

The next morning we cooked breakfast, took down tents, cleaned the campsite, and left camp at 10:00 AM. We completed the journey around the lake on a short path and departed for home at 12:15 AM.

On the weekend of September 17-18, 2011, members of Troop 61 Sudbury canoed off the shore of Cape Cod to Washburn Island, an uninhabited strip of land no more than two miles long. Before becoming a popular camping spot, the island had been used as a World War II landing site for the Army Amphibious Command. As a service project, scouts were encouraged to pick up trash left by previous campers.

After pushing off from the landing in Falmouth, scouts paddled about forty minutes through a serene channel with motorboats anchored on both sides and picturesque homes clinging to green hills overlooking the water. Arriving on the shore of Washburn Island, scouts hiked along a cracked concrete trail that had been used for military purposes. Off to the side of the trail the carcass of a rusted JEEP littered with bullet-holes lay half buried in the soil. After returning to the beach, the scouts pushed off and paddled to another landing, where the gear was unloaded and heaved up a slope and off the beach. Then it was carried along a well-worn path covered with pine needles to the campsite, a large open space with a few trees and two fire rings, which scouts were exuberant about because fire is now being permitted on the island. Once all gear had been organized, all tents set up, and lunches eaten, scouts canoed farther down the shore to a strip of sand. The clamming rake and fishing rods were put to use, catching four fish and a multitude of clams. Scouts also caught minnows to use as bait. Another Army trail was discovered perched atop a hill.

Upon return to the campsite, Mrs. Fogarty instructed scouts on how to clean a fish. Then the catch was wrapped in tinfoil and placed on the fire along with the clams. The steaming, juicy meat was devoured quickly along with a pasta stew. After being terrorized around the campfire with stories of Chunky the Raccoon, a massive beast the size of a patrol box that roamed the island in search of free meals, the scouts lay down for the night.

Upon waking and eating breakfast, all gear was packed up and loaded into the canoes. Then the campsite was swept. Landing the canoes on a close beach, scouts spent their remaining time beach-combing. Among the list of objects discovered were a jellyfish and Chunky tracks. Then the scouts were forced to paddle against the wind back to the landing on the mainland and their awaiting cars which brought them home.

This year, your son has an important decision to make: Which Boy Scout Troop is he going to join? There are 3 Troops in Sudbury, and you can join whichever Troop you and he think suits your family best. It doesn’t matter which school, church, synagogue or temple you have or will attend, you can chose any Boy Scout Troop. How can you work out which Troop is best for you? We suggest you visit with them all, decide which one seems like the most fun, and decide which one has the program and boys that seem like the best fit for you.

And what’s the best way to meet Troop 61? Come camping with us! We have all the tents and camping gear you’ll need. And we supply all the food too!

The boys in the Troop have planned a great weekend of camping for you and your son. Your son will actually get to join with his friends and act as a Scout Patrol for the entire weekend. If you would like, we will put up a tent for you and your son to sleep in, or if you’d prefer, you can use your own tent. You and your son will cook on an open fire and he will learn other basic Scout skills as well as play games with the guys from the Troop and generally have a great time. It starts at Noon Saturday and you’ll be home by Noon Sunday.

For planning purposes, we need to establish a headcount as soon as possible, so please let us know as soon as you can

Troop 61 provides all the food, tents, camping equipment and the FUN! All you and your son need to bring is a sleeping bag, warm clothing and inquisitive minds. We will give you a complete packing list when you sign up. But don’t worry, you don’t need a back-pack or any other specialist equipment, we have all the gear.

As the sun goes down, we’ll all work together to prepare our own dinners on the campfire using the ‘foil-cooking method’. We provide all the food, the foil and the know-how. Trust us, you’ll make a delicious meal first time!

Along the way, you’ll see our ‘boy lead’ Troop in action, have a chance to meet other parents and Scouts and have a great time.

We’ve all stood in your shoes, ‘interviewing’ different Scout Troops and trying to help our sons make a good decision, so we know what it’s like for you. Summer’s just over, the kids are back to school and suddenly you’re being asked to make a decision you probably had no idea you needed to make! So each year the Troop works hard to make the Overnight Campout a memorable event, and makes sure it addresses all the questions we know we had before our sons joined.
Sudbury’s Matt DeLaney and nine of his fellow high school seniors were heading to Jamaica to complete some community service projects at the Yalles Elementary School on the impoverished west coast of the island. They planned to teach the young pupils some arts and crafts skills and play some sports including rugby. And that by itself would have been a very memorable trip.

SUDBURY - From across the lake, and through the darkness the hushed crowd of more than 500 Scouts and parents saw six flaming torches begin to make their way toward the amphitheatre. A minute later, six Scouts in Native American costume reached land, walked through the crowd, and selected the nine Scouts who were to receive this year’s Order of Taunkacoo Honor Camper award. For Troop 61 Sudbury, the 2009 recipient was 15 year old Lincoln Sudbury High School sophomore, Julian Helgeson.

So concluded the final campfire of Troop 61’s annual summer fun-fest week long event at Camp Resolute in Bolton. This year, together with eight other troops from Southborough, Maynard, Natick, Bedford, Westborough and Saxonville, 29 boys and eight adult leaders camped and had the kind of fun which lives deep in the memory for a lifetime.

SUDBURY - On Sunday June 7, more than 100 members of the Sudbury community gathered at the Sudbury United Methodist Church in Sudbury to honor Jacob Lifschultz, Lincoln Sudbury Regional High School senior, as he received the rank of Eagle Scout.

Nationwide, fewer than 2 percent of Scouts receive the rank of Eagle. Scouting in Sudbury today has more than 400 members and boasts a rate of almost 12 percent expected to receive the rank of Eagle Scout. In fact, Troop 61, the oldest and fastest growing Troop in Sudbury, has graduated 56 Eagle Scouts in its more than 70 year history. Moreover, the interest in, and pace at which Scouts have been earning the rank of Eagle Scout has increased in recent years, with 21 Eagles having been awarded by Troop 61 alone in the last 10 years.

SUDBURY - When Alan Williamson joined a Waltham Boy Scout troop in 1959 he discovered an activity that would shape the rest of his life. Those early days camping with his troop at the Hale Reservation in Westwood sparked a passion for the outdoors that he has shared with thousands of young Scouts as he helped them to learn life lessons along with practical skills.

A scoutmaster from the age of 18, Williamson has received local, national and international awards for his work and holds leadership roles in Sudbury Troop 61 and on the board of the Knox Trail Council. The father of three, a Sudbury resident since 1972, Williamson also coached Sudbury Youth Basketball and served on the Park and Recreation Commission.
